Florida Insurance Changes May Still Be Confusing for Florida Residents

By July 24, 2013Health Insurance, News

According to Enroll America, close to 80 percent of uninsured adults still do not understand the health insurance options available to them in 2014. The time to purchase Florida insurance on exchanges is approaching quickly. Making sure these residents understand how it works will become a huge task.

Health insurers plan on spending millions of dollars for advertisements that explain their plans. The federal government is also launching several multi-million dollar campaigns that will hire people for door-to-door walks, target social networks, use phone apps, collaborate with libraries, partner with mayors, etc. Even local nonprofits and health clinics have joined the advertising mix to inform the Florida public about how to purchase the best Florida insurance online.

Breaking Down the Affordable Care Act

Florida residents’ brains will be crammed, in this short amount of time, with a ton of information designed to walk them through the enrollment process. People may become intimidated by the all the facts they will soon be introduced to. Breaking down what the Affordable Care Act does for Florida residents may be complicated to explain and here’s some reasons why:

  1. Insurers will be introduced to a new form of business: When online marketplaces open, insurers will distinctly be changing the way they have always done business. Now, insurers will be directly selling Florida insurance to the uninsured public and there is still some confusion as to how they can do that effectively and efficiently.
  2. Florida’s legislature will not be taking part of the marketing strategy: Florida legislature has been back and forth on the issue of Obamacare. They decided to let the federal government run the state’s online exchanges and do not plan on spending any money towards marketing or informing the public about marketplaces.
  3. Insurers are still confused: Since Florida legislature denied helping with outreach efforts to inform the public, the federal government allotted money for trained navigators to help people compare plans. The problem is, a lot of Florida insurance carriers have not received the grant they were awarded to hire those navigators. Navigators have to be certified, and the federal government has not laid out the details of that process. Insurers are not sure what they should be getting ready for or how they can help the public.
  4. People still have not received important information: With Florida insurance marketplaces opening in October, the federal government has not released which insurers will be offering plans and how much deductibles, premiums and copays might be. The rates are said to come out in September, but that doesn’t give the public enough time to decipher through all the information they will be given.
